OBJECTCUBE ANNOUNCES DEBUT OF DVD-QUALITY
VIDEO ON NEAR DEMAND SERVICE
25/04/2002: Streaming
Media West 2002, Los Angeles, CA. objectCube announces
the debut of its Video on Near Demand
service which will premiere today at Streaming Media
West 2002 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
The new service utilizes
off-peak Internet bandwidth to deliver extremely high-quality
digital video directly to the consumer for as little
as $0.50 per movie. At the same time, video producers
can securely track and manage copyrighted content
without relying on middlemen such as cable providers,
video rental stores or satellite distributors.
By offering a
complete end-to-end solution that takes
advantage of less expensive off-peak bandwidth,
explained Jay Janarthanan, CTO and co-founder of objectCube,
we are able to deliver very high-quality video
to viewers at one of the lowest price points in the
industry, and the content provider does not have to
pay for large capital expenditures in software or
hardware.
This service takes
advantage of unused or low-demand bandwidth during
off-peak times to push very high-quality video onto
a users computer or a custom TV set top box
before a scheduled time requested by the viewer. Using
intelligent networking software and some very smart
networking algorithms, objectCube achieves maximum
bandwidth utilization while minimizing costs. Where
other services are charging five to 20 dollars to
distribute a high-quality movie, objectCubes
pricing is as low as 50 cents. Because the entire
video is downloaded in advance, it is not possible
for network slowdowns or outages to degrade the viewer's
experience. Also, since the content provider (with
assistance from objectCubes management software)
assigns digital rights management, it is not possible
for the viewer to re-distribute or copy the content.
By providing a solution
that is more convenient and secure than video rental
stores and much more scalable and higher quality than
current streaming technologies, objectCube provides
the ideal delivery medium for video providers. If
a user wants to watch a movie, they will make a request
in advance using a Web-based interface. The movie
will be pushed to a client's PC or TV set top box
from one or more of our servers during off-peak times.
On average, a quality one-hour long movie can be sent
to a user in about 3 hours using a DSL or cable modem
connection.
If the customer
requests the movie by lunch time, they can view the
movie before sitting down for dinner. This is much
more convenient than running to a video rental store
only to discover that your movie has been checked
out! explained Joseph Sarmiento, objectCube's
Director of North American Sales.
Digital rights management
is applied to the video files before they are pushed
to the users. Because of this feature the movies can
only be viewed by the person who purchased it.
The complete service
is offered in an Application Service Provider (ASP)
model with objectCube hosting and distributing the
content. By using the service, customers can concentrate
on creating content and not worry about setting up
an infrastructure to sell and distribute content.
objectCube will
also premiere a low-cost TV set top box at the show.
Customers who do not want to use their computer to
store and watch the movies can use this new product
instead. objectCube plans to sell the TV set top boxes
below cost with the intention of recovering its investment
through content delivery charges.
